One Down, Forty-Nine to Go.

California as become the first state in the country to ban therapy that tries to turn gay teens straight.

Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, one of the bills sponsors, stated that 'bogus and unethical practices by mental-health providers to try to change a young person's sexual orientation have resulted in irreparable psychological and emotional harm to patients.'

This pleases me so. As a student on the road to becoming a mental health professional, these programs anger me. While I know they are damaging no matter what age, it especially broke my heart when impressionable young adults and children had to go through them. As therapists, counselors, psychologist, or what have you, one is supposed to help not hinder and definitely not to purposefully instill shame and self hatred. Hopefully this trend continues and expands. Great news to wake up to.

General Meeting Minutes (9/13) and Upcoming JP Morgan Information Event

At today's meeting, we discussed the theme for our Halloween event Freak Fest and came to the decision to have it be "Gender Bender". The idea will be put forward to Student Life and the LGBT History Month Committee. We also went over possible Trans speakers and performers for our finale event. If you have any programs or performers that you think would be amazing for us to have, shoot us an email!





Also, JP Morgan will be hosting an event to meet with LGBT members who desire work in office and asset management. Going to this event will give students a great opportunity to learn about business and share experiences for improving yourself as a job candidate. 

We will be having our next General Meeting next Thursday from 12:40pm-2:20pm in room 4-190 in the NVC Building.

The Peculiar Kind

Recently we received an email from one of our members at Baruch College about the online series entitled "The Peculiar Kind": A web series that interviews various queer people of color about topics within the gay community.

Recently, the program has moved to producing a documentary that moves further than their traditional 10 minute YouTube videos. This would definitely be a great showing to bring to the student body, especially considering that people of color in the LGBTQ community aren't usually represented as much.
