<![endif]-->One of the problems that the LGBT community has been facing for years is if they should be included in the definition of family. Common sense would say yes, but apparently many landlords and housing authorities lack common sense.
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD for short, oversees the nation’s many housing authorities and provides affordable housing through Section 8, public housing, and subsidies paid to landlords if they agree to offer reduced rents to qualifying applicants, which include low-income families, the disabled, and the elderly. Unfortunately, many landlords and housing authorities involved in the programs chose to deny families that would otherwise be qualified on the grounds that one or more of their members were or perceived to be LGBT. HUD failed to clarify this in their definition of family, so landlords were allowed to this without fear of repercussions.

To fix this loophole, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan will prevent discrimination against LGBT families by landlords and prohibit lenders from denying LGBT families HUD-insured mortgage financing.

According to this article, Donovan provided an example of discrimination when Michelle DeShane wanted to add his partner Mitch DeShane, a transgender man, to his Section 8 voucher, but were denied because they didn’t meet their local housing authority’s definition of family.

Of course, this is only a first step, but Donovan has stated that his department will undertake further steps to ensure training and education happen to implement the measure. He thanks LGBT groups for providing feedback for the new rule. Hopefully, other federal departments will follow suit.

David Tejeda (Secretary)

Reflecting Back at Eric James Borges

<img style="float:left; <![endif]-->
As many of us have heard, one of the pioneers of the famous “It Gets Better” video campaign, Eric James Borges, has passed away from the exact thing his videos were meant to prevent. This is a tragic event for his friends, family, and the LGBT community.

This just goes to show everyone that there are many factors that bring someone to suicide and it takes more than words from the public to prevent these unfortunate phenomena amongst LGBT youth. I believe it takes action from those who are close to the person, friends, family, and peers. I believe we have to personally show the people who are close to us, whom we believe to be showing signs of suicide, whether we are sure they are LGBT or not, that you care for their life and that you will be there for them. The reason I say this is because it can happen to someone who is struggling with their own sexual identity or being harassed because they are perceived to be gay or bisexual, as this website shows.

The sad possibility was that because he was so involved in a project to prevent teen suicide, nobody close to him thought he would do this to himself and any clues that this would happen were ignored, which is logical. Hopefully Eric James Borges’ passing won’t be in vain and will show that no one is “immune” to suicide.

Here are some resources for suicide prevention among LGBT youth:

LGBT Youth Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-866-4-U-TREVOR

http://www.thetrevorproject.org/lifelinechat

http://www.sprc.org/library/SPRC_LGBT_Youth.pdf

http://www.afsp.org/index.cfm?page_id=6FB9BA00-7E90-9BD4-C33BD398EAAE73C0

http://www.hhd.org/resources/story/lgbt-youth-suicide-risk-and-prevention

David Tejeda (Secretary)

New E-Board Members and Events for Spring 2012!

With the start of the the 2012 Spring semester approaching, I'd like to introduce the new E-Board members of G.L.A.S.S.: Jason Robertson as president and David Tejeda, yours truly, as secretary. We had a great turnout and discussion yesterday involving our speakers. It was great to know that attendees came away from the event, inspired by the professionals that came to speak.

Moving forward, we have a more great events just around the corner. Tomorrow we will be featuring "Bash Back!" A self-defense class that will feature lessons and demonstrations from Master Elena Waldman. Come over the 2nd floor lobby in the NVC building during club hours to learn effective techniques for defense. By advised: Space is limited and mats will be given out on a first come, first served basis!

Secondly, we will later in the evening be featuring a movie screening of the film: "Equality U," which follows one groups' journey across the country to promote equality and fight homophobia across college campuses in the US. Refreshments will be served and a discussion will follow after the film.

This month is turning out to be a great opportunity to spread the word for equality, build community, and getting active at Baruch College. We look forward to seeing you all there at the following events!

Jason Robertson (Secretary)

National Coming Out Day!

We are excited to announce our first event for LGBT History Month. Dare to Engage, as well as both the current and former president of GLASS held some very moving and profound speeches. The proceedings at the opening of The Center show the passion that fellow club members and students hold for making progress at Baruch College. That being said, it was excellent to see incoming Freshmen and transfer students enjoying the new space as they met with the senior members of GLASS.

Next up is tomorrow's first meeting for LGBT History month. The committee will be discussing some of the biggest upcoming events of the semester at Baruch College. We will be meeting in room 2-210, from 1pm-2pm, in the Student Life office of the Vertical Campus. This is a great way for members to get involved and help organize for GLASS.

Remember to stop by and find out what's happening in the LGBT community and learn about the GLASS projects that you can start getting involved with!

Jason Robertson (Secretary)

Start of Fall 2011 News!

A new semester has begun here at Baruch College and with it are so many exciting events lined up. The following statement concerning the incident was issued on the center's website by Ececutive Director, Glennda Testone:

As many of you know, on the morning of April 14, 2010 the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center staff arrived to find a torched rainbow flag draped on the front of our building. This act of hate must not be tolerated! Actions like this are menacing to our community and, if not addressed, can lead to an environment that allows more heinous acts, such as verbal attacks, property damage and physical violence. Yet provocations are not ceasing as the multifaceted nature of China's rapidly changing society poises it for an inexhaustive amount of demographic complexities that may or may not be accounted for due to a degree of resistance from the nation's traditional past. The Economist recently touched upon this impending issue through a brief expose on the hidden presence of homosexuality within the confines of China's semi-progressive borders. The article unveils, to uninformed readers, the Chinese slang term "tongqi" referring to the hordes of closeted Chinese gay men who choose not only to repress their same-sex desires to escape societal pressure, but are even more so driven by concretely molded familial expectations to enter into marriages with heterosexual women. Chinese filmmaker, Lou Ye, eloquently addresses this chronic phenomenon in his recent film, Spring Fever(The above still image is a screenshot from the film). The implications of such a societal trend are blantantly clear yet the solution remains vague and unattainable. Both parties are destined to suffer as the men doom themselves toward a lifestyle of perpetual self-denial where the core of their sexual identity remains unactualized to the public society and the hapless wives silently suffer in loveless marriages forever designated as chronically undesirable in the eyes of their sexually repressed spouses. Halfhearted remedies are pursued--the men opt for secret, same-sex love affairs instead of divorce--much to the detriment of the wife's self esteem. Such a practice sparks not much surprise and can be assessed through a weighing of a few competing social variables. A strict analysis of Chinese society with emphasis on its transitory state-- making its way from a family-centered society towards a capitalistic, profit driven world run by doctrines of rugged individualism--can lend some input on the progress of acceptance for homosexuals. Yet a more modern, westernized dominated society does not always signal relief for repressed sexual minorities as even in our own American borders active protest is necessary for tolerance and recognition. Additionally, to place the terms 'tradiitional' and 'modern' at the face of the problem would be a misnomer given the visibility of homosexuality dates back to ancient cultures. While partially neglecting the prevailing influence of Confucian tradition on Chinese society, one could argue that the religious underpinnings of the nation as a whole would generate greater room for acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle. As the facts of history dictate, homosexuality has most predominantly and vehemently been condemned in countries where Judeo-Christian/Islamic doctrines govern over the spiritual lives of its inhabitants. With China's prevailing Buddhist population, a more lenient perspective of same-sex relations could be hoped for. Yet, the situation remains complex with an entanglement of social and cultural dynamics fueled by traditionalism and a lack of exposure to homosexuality in general. Arguably, progress lies in the hands of the gay Chinese citizens who consciously choose to mask their despised sexual identities due to a lack of self acceptance thus creating a self-reinforcing cycle where neither society nor homosexuals themselves can develop the means to confront and accept an alternative way of being. Current and future generations will see China emerge as an international superpower, the strengths of the country dispersing its prosperity for other competing economies to waver in awe, yet the idiosyncracies and complexities of this vast and ceaselessly expanding nation will momentarily deter its growth, and in accordance to this the continuous suppression of civil and social liberties will inevitably awaken the repressed spirits of millions of pissed off Chinese citizens who now have achieved economic freedom but yearn even more intensely for their chronically denied individual freedom. With this awakening hopefully, eventually...maybe progress will inch towards the recognition of China's existing, though hidden sexual minorities. But all in due time.
http://www.economist.com/world/asia/displaystory.cfm?story_id=15731324

Bible Belt State Halts Freedom of Expression

The anti-gays, pro-conservatives, and raving religious fanatics are relentless in their bigotry and continue to make others suffer for it. Itawamba County school district board in the state of Mississippi recently announced the cancellation of a high school prom in attempt to prevent a lesbian couple from attending. The school board vaguely attributed its' actions "to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events." The ambiguity of these words reinforce the underlying actions of the school board, and weakly serve as a veil geared to mask the blatant disgust these bigoted Southerners possess for homosexuals. One could never doubt that in NYC hoards of gay supporters would gang together in unison to riot against such an act. Yet, in a backward state such as Mississippi, where even the youth refrain from holding progressive views, combative efforts to support the lesbian couple are nothing but slim. In attempt to gauge public opinion, one Mississippi teen was quoted stating in response to the incident, "I don't agree with homosexuality, but I can't change what another person thinks or does." I can't help but assess that this statement stands as one of the more tame attitudes concerning homosexuality harbored by Mississippi residents, and it is more than doubtful that statistics would be needed to affirm that most Mississippians are in full support in the canceling of the prom. This consequently brings us to another crucial point. While steps by gay rights advocacy groups, primarily ACLU, have been issued forth to pressure the school board in allowing the teen gay couple to attend the prom, the legality and moral basis of this can be questioned even by gay supporters. Mississippi, grips tightly to Christian doctrine, and this fact cannot be undermined. Ultimately, whether or not it might violate constitutional rights it is a state issue which should be left up to Mississippians to decide. The residents are the ones paying tax money to fund the public schools and should have ultimate say as to the proper conduct permitted on school grounds. While most gay rights activists may shun this reasoning it still must be taken into legal consideration. Limiting one's freedom of expression is morally wrong, but so is imposing one's ideologies on others. Just as the Mississippi teen stated unfortunately you can't change what a person thinks or does. And so for now in an effort towards diplomacy we will all just have to live with their unshakeable hatred until Mississippi finally does join us in the 21st century.

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2010/03/12/us/AP-US-Lesbian-Prom-Date.html

Another Gain for the Gay Agenda!

Attempts by conservatives to stifle pro-gay marriage initiatives have been beaten as Washington D.C. joins five other states--Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut--in permitting same-sex couples to marry. The measure went into effect on Wednesday as gay couples from the nation's capital rushed to obtain marriage licenses in the wee hours of the morning as a means of rejoicing in another milestone for equal rights. Much political praise is attributed to Mayor Adrian Fenty who signed the bill titled Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Act into law in December 2009 after the D.C. council voted in an overwhelming majority--11 to 2--to allow gay couples to marry. Given Washington D.C.'s unique status the law was required to undergo a 30 day Congressional review period which came to a conclusion on Tuesday with no veto, consequently, allowing it to stand and go into effect. While dissenters towards the law are rampant in D.C., the feeling of hard won victory can still be cherished among residents in the district. Perhaps Rev. Dennis Wiley, co-pastor at Covenant Baptist Church has assessed the landmark event most accurately:
"Love has won out over fear. Equality has won out over prejudice. Faith has won out over despair."
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/04/us/04marriage.html?hp

LGBT HISTORY MONTH AT BARUCH!!

LGBT History Month
This is Baruch College's second annual recognition of LGBT History Month (No longer known as LGBT Appreciation Month). A Bittersweet Decision

At the end of this semester, I, Kevin Ng, will be stepping down as the President of G.L.A.S.S. The reason I will be stepping down is that I will be studying abroad during the Fall 2009 semester. Upon my return to Baruch the following spring, I will remain in G.L.A.S.S. on the Events Committee and will continue to volunteer my time to the club. I am stepping down to also pursue other opportunities both on and off campus, as well as for educational reasons. I am notifying everyone now because I hope to give members who are interested in running for the position to get more involved in G.L.A.S.S. and learn more about our events, their planning and organization, and working with Student Life.

This is a great opportunity and has allowed me to network with other organizations on campus, as well as employees at various companies. If you would like to learn more about this and other positions, please attend the Feb. 5th meeting.

3. Club Room Hours

New times in which the club room, VC 3-239, are posted on the right-hand side of this page. Please check back here often, as the times are subject to change in these next few days, as well as in the future.

The club room is our place to socialize, relax, or even study. We have comfy chairs and a computer with Internet access. Feel free to drop by any time, as we have an open door policy. If you are worried about other organizations, we like to note that we have been welcomed by our very friendly, tolerant, and understanding neighboring organizations in the club area. We also like to note that there's an "S" in G.L.A.S.S. for a reason, just in case you get made fun of when you're not gay or if you're not out!
